Lipid metabolism of manganese-deficient algae. I. Effect of manganese deficiency on the greening and the lipid composition of Euglena gracilis Z.

چکیده
The growth of photoautotrophic Euglena gracilis Z is strongly inhibited by manganese deficiency, whereas chlorophyll formation is not appreciably affected. The galactosyldiglyceride content of the manganese-deficient photo-autotrophic Euglena was about 40% lower on the basis of either chlorophyll content or dry weight. When dark-grown cultures of Euglena were grown photoheterotrophically in light sufficient for the greening of the cells, or photosynthesis, manganese deficiency resulted in a reduction of the cellular content of chlorophyll and galactosyldiglycerides to 40% of control values, indicating interference with chloroplast formation. The fatty acids of the photoheterotrophic manganese-deficient cells were mainly saturated, with an unusual accumulation (about 45%) of the total fatty acids) of myristic acid. In spite of this, the galactosyldiglycerides contain mainly unsaturated fatty acids. Ninety per cent of the fatty acids of the monogalactosyldiglyceride are unsaturated, including large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid. The ratio of chlorophyll to galactosyldiglyceride content of the cells was remarkably constant at all manganese deficiency levels.

On the Role of Manganese in Photosynthesis: Kinetics of Photoinhibition in Manganese-deficent and 3-(4-Chlorophenyl)-1, 1-dimethylurea-inhibited Euglena gracilis.
Euglena gracilis (Klebs) cultures were grown under conditions where limitation in supply of manganese limited chlorophyll content much more than growth. Although the initial rates of photosynthetic oxygen evolution were not affected by the level of manganese, photoinhibition in high intensity light was markedly influenced. All cultures showed first order kinetics for photoinhibition, with the h...
متن کاملPhoto-mixotrophic Cultivation of Algae Euglena gracilis for Lipid Production
In the future, due to limited resources, a crisis of energy storing molecules (fuels), which are currently produced from crude mineral oil, is expected. One strategy to compensate a part of the oil defi ciency is the production of biodiesel from microalgal lipids. As model microorganism for lipid production microalgae Euglena gracilis was selected and photo-mixotrophic cultivation was performed...
متن کاملManganese: A Potent Antioxidant in Semen
Antioxidant are the agents which dispose / scavenge the reactive oxygen species, minimize the oxidative stress / lipid peroxidation and ultimately improve the fertilizing potential of the spermatozoa. Currently, many antioxidants are under investigation and manganese is one of them in reducing the oxidative stress both in male and female. The antioxidative action of manganese (Mn2+) on various ...

The development of reliable, sustainable, and economical sources of alternative fuels is an important, but challenging goal for the world. As an alternative to liquid fossil fuels, algal biofuel is expected to play a key role in alleviating global warming since algae absorb atmospheric CO2 via photosynthesis. Among various algae for fuel production, Euglena gracilis is an attractive microalgal ...

On the current study the effects of reducing branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) in diets of Sobaity sea bream in a constant level (40%) on growth and nutritional indices, pancreatic enzymes activity, whole body chemical proximate and amino acids, was assessed. This experiment was conducted in Marine Fish Research Station of Imam Khomeini harbor during July and August of 2014. For these purposes,...
